Makes Quick Work of Most Sharpening Jobs
Having compared this file to several others I routinely use, I think it’s a good all-purpose file that will definitely make quick work of lawn mower blades, old rusty axes, and any metal that needs filing/tuning up. Files come in different tooth patterns, which fall into these groups: rough, middle, bastardd, second cut, smooth, and dead smooth. This one is the bastardd file, which puts it right in the middle of the pack and means you can do most things with it.As I mention in my video, this file is comfortable to work with in part because of the handle, but also because it’s smaller than some files and thus quite agile. You can of course use the sides of the file, but I only do that when I want to cut a square notch in something. 99% of the time, I’m using the flat face of this file — and it is very “sharp” meaning it aggressively files on other metals.I’ve used Stanley tools for over two decades now, and appreciate the quality of their products. This file is amazingly affordable, but it’s not low quality like some I’ve made the mistake of falling for at the local discount tool store. It’s a good file at a good price, and I expect to be using it for many years to come. A good tool should last a person’s lifetime, and this file is certainly in that category.A NOTE ON SHARPENING: I tend to use this file as a first pass in sharpening jobs only when the blade I’m sharpening has burs or dings. You can use a grind stone for this, but a file is a bit more precise in my experience. Mower blades can be sharpened with a file and nothing else. Knives tend to need a stone just to really hone that blade………………This product was NOT given to me as part of any promotion. I bought it after doing some comparison shopping and this review is entirely the result of my own opinions and use of the product.

Gotta Love The Handle
We live in hot and humid Southwest Florida, an environment of almost perpetual summer with plants and trees growing all year. I do all my own yard work which involves mowing 3 acres of lawn and cutting, trimming and thinning out the various plants and trees. In addition we have another acre of wetlands that require mangrove trimming twice a year and constant vigilance to kill the Brazilian Pepper trees and other invasive plants.Maintaining all of my equipment properly is important to both avoiding rust and having a good blade on my cutting tools. Since I have been doing this myself for around 30 years I have accumulated not only a bunch of tools (both hand tools and motor driven) but also several different sharpeners. I don’t think that I can even count (or in some cases even find) all of the cutting tools I have. They include lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, machetes, axes and hatchets, chain saws, pruning shears and saws, knives, pruners, loppers, shovels, rakes, and hoes.Keeping your tools sharp always pays off in reducing the effort required to accomplish many outdoor tasks. I probably have around 20 machetes of different weights, blade length, and type of steel that can be used for specific tasks. Sharpening machetes can be hazardous and every once in a while I will suffer a knick or cut from holding onto the file. But this Stanley 8″ Mill Bastard File has a great handle that keeps my fingers away from the blades. It also becomes particularly useful when reaching underneath the zero radius mower to sharpen the three blades. The handle gives you extra leverage when honing and also lets you approach each blade at the proper angle. Sharp blades result in clean and efficient cuts, attributes really important when cutting dense lawns. While I do own a few sharpening stones, I find that the Mil Bastard accomplishes most of my required tasks easily. If I could only have one sharpener, this would be it.

Very Impressive
So, I have never sharpened lawnmower blades in my life (I’m over 50). Last couple lawn cuts, I could really tell there was an issue with the blades so hit youtube to learn proper way to sharpen the blades. I purchased a drill bit for sharpening the blades but after doing more research, it appeared to me that a good file was crucial to have so I got this, and WOW, was I ever impressed. The blades on my Honda push mower were in terrible shape when I pulled them, very dull and lots of nicks. This file shaped the blades right back to where they should be and made them nice and sharp again, like or better than new. The file was very easy to use, but like other reviews I read, would be nice if it were about 3-4 inches longer, but still OK as is. If you are going to sharpen blades, get this, you won’t regret it! I know it works awesome for lawnmowers, I would imagine it will work well on about any metal blade. I am so glad I got this! Highly recommended!

Cheap and works well.
It’s a file. Hard and brittle – use it to sharpen axes, chisels, etc. and it will serve you fine.

Good file.
This is a good file. The handle makes it easy to really push the file firmly. This is a single pattern file so it can only be pushed one way on whatever is being sharpened, not back and forth. It is not as aggressive as a double or rasp pattern file.I use it on garden tools. I found that the Accu Sharp Gardening Tool Sharpener did not work well on a steel edger I was trying to sharpen. This file worked much better. It took care of business for me in short order and make the sharpening a very easy task.It files a blade fairly smoothly; perhaps not quite smooth enough for a kitchen knife. But certainly for gardening tools.

Nice bastard !
Seems to be well made file and solid handle. At “add on” price it is about half what you would pay elsewhere. If you are only going too own one file for metal a “bastard” cut Is the way to go. It files about twice as fast as a straight cut although a little rougher finish. Most every time you need a file you want to remove metal fast. Nice average file.

Easy to use file that is rough enough to make quick work of finishing 3d prints. All 4 surfaces had the same finish which may work or not for some, and it narrows slightly towards the top.Haven’t had any issues yet; good quality tool for my purpose.

I don’t need a file often, but needed a general purpose file for an Airgunsmith project and thanks to amazon.ca, I didn’t have to spend much $$$ to own a quality tool for the job.
