Self-taught sewer-got schooled
I just learned patterned swiss darning to mend a nearly new Ped’s ankle sock. The heel was separating from the body of the sock. I ordered this book along with Joy of Mending”. Joy gives happiness. Mend and Patch gets the job done with longer happiness.It took less time to hand sew the 3″hole than driving the store for another pair. Thank you Kerstin

Jeans are Mended
I followed the book’s directions and was able to repair (almost invisibly) a pair of stone-washed jeans that had begun to rip.Minus one star because the flow of the book wasn’t as smooth as I’d have liked. After describing how to add a patch to the underside of the tear, the text immediately flowed into the instructions of hand stitching the remainder of the repair. I wanted to use a sewing machine which did have instructions but was several pages later in the book.

Worth the money, even for skilled sewers
This book teaches several different handstitches and machine sewing techniques for mending both wovens and knits. It also includes tips on preventing wear in commonly torn places. The writing is engaging and the photos inspiring.

Every stitch has no end
I have been looking for a book specifically for hand sewing repairs on denim and cotton clothing and household items. To be honest I didn’t even know such books existed so I was very excited at the very first one I saw which was this book. The cover shows somebody hand stitching mending denim in the title of the book is Men & patch. It seemed like it was written for me, a kindred sew spirit.When I got the book I was very excited, as soon as you open it there is a cover flap that shows you three cool stitches there’s a forward where you get to meet the author a bit then she gives you essential equipment to use and that takes up a good 35 of 125 pages. Mending by hand is page 36 to 77. It’s mostly photographs with hints and tips.If you’re someone like me who has been sewing by hand with relatively no formal training and simply knows a stitch or two, I’m looking for simplistic start to finish instruction on how to do classic and creative mending of clothes.Unfortunately with this book the instructions all leaves out how to end a stitch. Literally every stitch says to tie a thread onto the remaining thread to continue. And then it’s on to the next stitch.I was so frustrated thinking well how do you end the thread? Maybe there’s something that I should know that I don’t but that’s not explained either.In other words she the author is assuming that by not instructing how to end the project that everyone already knows how.She’s very creative and she does beautiful work herself .. I just didn’t know how I would finish a project with this book.Unfortunately my search will have to continue for a good sewing by hand for creative cotton and denim beginners I guess.

Regret this purchase.
I’ve been sewing for almost 50 years and I thought, from the description, that this book would help with learning to mend a variety of fabrics with useful techniques. Wrong. So wrong. Useless photos, very poorly done hand stitching images, short and not very clear written instructions…I could go on, but I won’t. Very disappointed, but not worth the effort to return it, so I’m tossing it in the donations pile to take to my public library. If you’re looking for a good instructional book for mending this is definitely not it.

Excellent book with examples of how to darn, mend and patch clothes and wear them again. Less waste and landfill, beautiful patchworking and stitchery to make your clothes last longer. Highly recommended.
