HIPULX Store: Rotary Tool Tungsten Carbide Burr Set, 10 Unique Configurations, ⅛” Shank Diameter
HIPULX Store: Rotary Tool Tungsten Carbide Burr Set, 10 Unique Configurations, ⅛” Shank DiameterThis product is a set of ten (10) tungsten carbide burrs for use with a rotary tool. The product’s Amazon page states that the burrs are made from an alloy called “YG7X” and the steel shafts or shanks are made from “heat treated 60Mn steel.” I was not familiar with either of these material designations so, I asked my favorite AI. What I learned was:• YG7X is a Chinese grade of ultra-fine “cemented” or “sintered” carbide composed primarily of tungsten carbide (WC) powder fused together by a cobalt (Co) binder. It is an extremely hard composite material used for cutting tools and other wear-resistant applications.• 60Mn steel is a specific designation and a Chinese standard for a high-carbon alloy steel. The “60” signifies approximately 0.60% carbon content, and “Mn” represents manganese. It is considered a versatile and high-tensile strength steel with good hardness and wear resistance. These seem to be reasonable properties for making tungsten carbide rotary burr tools such as these. The product’s Amazon page states that the YG7X carbide burrs have a hardness of HRC 90 to 90.5, which is very hard. It also says that the double-cut design clears debris fast which is a very good property for a carbide rotary burr tool. The set of ten tungsten carbide burrs have a variety of shapes including “Cylindrical, Ball End, Oval, Curved, Torch, Conical, and Inverted Conical.” The diameter of the carbide burrs is approximately 1/4-inch.The burrs have a 1/8-inch shank that is an average of 4.5 inches long. Yes, that is correct; the shanks are about 4.5-inches long. I am uncertain why the shanks are so long but the product’s Amazon page does mention “Long Reach Work” which I do not totally understand. I was concerned about the length of the shank being so long and the possibility that the head of the tool would vibrate and possibly whip around when running at high rotary speeds. However, the shanks are very stiff and the possibility of unwanted vibration now seems to be rather unlikely. These tools were delivered in a two-part case that has a nearly clear but still translucent cover. The burrs themselves are placed into a dense foam block and the case seems to be quite protective of the tools.I decided to order these tools for use when working on small engines. I often find casting flash or burrs that have been raised during a machining process that has not been removed on new parts. Sometimes reused original parts also need to have excess metal removed to aid in the re-assembly process to ensure it does not cause future problems. I needed a very hard rotary burr and I prefer not to use a grinding stone product. I am uncertain as to whether the length of shanks will be or will become an issue, but I will give them a try. I like the shapes of the burrs and I particularly like their hardness. I am happy with this product.

well made, nice case, solves a lot of problems for me!
If you’ve used a lot of burr grinders, you’ll know that there are times where you need to reach into spaces where the grinding tool itsself won’t fit. These long-shaft burrs solve that problem in spades. Oh how I wish I’d had these years ago, it would have made my live much easier on many occasions. This is a particularly nice set. The protective case is quite sturdy and made from semi-flexible plastic that seems like it’ll put up with a lot of abuse without complaint. The burrs themselves are finely crafted – I especially appreciate the double cut edge, that’ll make quick work of pretty much anything. Yes, the long shafts won’t resist as much force as a shorter one would, but you shouldn’t really be pressing that hard to get a burr to grind – let the tool do the work! These are a great addition to my material shaping arsenal and will get a lot of use.
