    Nice punches
I bought these to replace my old set of hole punches. I use them for a variety of thin materials and so far they’ve worked great.

Just what we needed around the house
Why did you pick this product vs others?:Price and quantityPeople have said they’re not sharp.  For softer materials, they don’t have to be.  Mine are just fine!

    Be prepared to sharpen these
As others have said, this requires sharpening before use. Right out of the box it is quite useless. After sharpening, this worked well enough for my purposes. I’m rating it high at a 4 because I’m able to use it and I didn’t find anything remotely in the same price range. The price is reasonable for what you get. I just don’t know how many people buying this will own a bench grinder, so that seems like a big drawback. Also, I have experience with sharpening tools, and getting a consistent edge on the circular shape is an unusual challenge, so inexperienced people may have more trouble. The purchase was very worthwhile, just be aware that you will need to put in extra time and effort to sharpen them.

    Yep.
Reasonably sharp. I’ve made a few gaskets that actually work with them. It was a good purchase.

Blunt, not sharp out of the box.
Not a good product out of the box. Every single one was blunt and needs to be sharpened before the will punch leather. I bought them to replace cheap ones that I had that are blunted from use, but I could have just sharpened those instead of buying these new ones that need to be sharpened. Pretty disappointed. It’s as if some company used them and after they got dull from use, is selling them to recoup some of the money the invested in tools.

The good : – clearly marked sizes, functional tool roll, variety of sizesThe not-so-good : very rough finish on the inside of the flutes – so rough that there is no hope of grinding a polished surface without changing the diameter.: tips dull as seagull poop. These are a challenge to shapen. I used a folding hone and files to create a sharp edge on the 3/4 bit I used.I found that the flute condition didn’t affect my use case – driving it through 1/2 thick butel rubber to make walking stick ends. After sharpening it held it’s edge for a couple dozen punches. This is admittedly far heavier a task than these were designed for but they worked perfectly for this purpose. It takes 3 heavy blows with a mini sluggo to get through the rubber. The challenge is keeping the bit plumb while hitting it – I made a number os angled tapers that had to be tossed before I got the hang of it. A press would be a better tool for the job.I couldn’t find walking stick ends for sale anywhere except for garbage that had reverse taper and looked nasty in the picture on Amazon and Ebay. Anyone intersted in duplicating these : I used a slab of SBR (Styrene Butadiene Rubber) Sheet, 70 Shore A, Black, Smooth Finish, No Backing, 1/2″ Thickness, 12″ Width, 12″ Length. The rubber has great grip and compression and work perfectly for walking stick ends. The price seems to have risen on the rubber (now @ 20.00) but I still have material for another 100 tips. The trick is that the rubber slug is formed with a taper reverse to a wood plug cutter – the wide end is up.So pe-drilling a countersink for screws is tricky and I just ended up holding them in my fingers (kind of risky but felt controllable) on the drill press table for the screw hole and countersonk for the screw head. This explains why the commercially available ones have a reverse taper – all the operations were done from the same side of the rubber. Lazy.
