Handy Helper for Siding Projects – Time-Saver with Some Quirks
This siding tool has been a real game-changer for my home renovation project. It’s like having an extra set of hands, holding the cement boards steady while I nail them in place. The adjustable spacing feature is pretty nifty – I’ve been able to get consistent gaps between boards without constantly measuring. It’s sturdy enough to hold a full 12-foot board, which is impressive for a plastic tool. The rubber grip is a nice touch, hasn’t left any marks on my pre-painted siding. Installation is pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it – took me a few tries to get the rhythm down, but now it’s smooth sailing. It’s definitely made the job quicker, and I’ve been able to work solo instead of calling in favors from friends. Now for the downsides – it can be a bit fiddly to adjust the spacing, especially with gloves on. The clamp is strong, but I’ve had it slip a couple times on particularly warped boards. And while it’s great for straight runs, it’s not much help around windows or corners. The plastic feels durable, but I’m a bit worried about how it’ll hold up to long-term UV exposure if I store it outside. If you’re tackling a siding project on your own and don’t mind a bit of a learning curve, this tool could save you a lot of time and frustration. Just don’t expect it to solve all your siding woes – you’ll still need some DIY skills to get the job done right.

    Worked perfectly!
These siding gauges are great for doing siding by yourself! I was worried about slipping but these hold plenty strong to do a full 12′ piece as long as you place it gently. Used it with Hardie siding, 7″ reveal 12′ pieces and did my whole house without issue. Adjustability is great but also not so easy you could put it to the wrong setting by mistake like some other gauges I’ve used. Highly recommend

Works great, but heed my tips
Use light pressure when clamping these onto fiber cement board and don’t leave them clamped for very long. I was clamping them down with a lot of force which was damaging the fiber cement board exterior surface. Only light clamping is needed, even when you’re working with 8′ board lengths.Don’t leave the clamps attached to the board when you don’t need to. I left some clamped for a few hours and when I took them off, it took off the fiber cement board exterior with them. Also periodically clean the rubber side of the clamps (where they touch the board) to remove the fiber cement board particles that can collect there. They can also damage your exterior. My only complaint about these tools is that the acorn nut likes to come off easily. I know they’re meant to come off so you can change the board height (and you’ll likely need to change the height when you get into tricky situations like below windows, below eaves, etc) but these like to fall off and then you can’t find them. Not sure if Gecko Gauges are any better as I haven’t used them. These are absolutely worth the price if you’re attaching fiber cement board in a “lap siding” style.

DOES NOT WORK FOR 5/16″ HARDIE LAP SIDING
This product does not work for James Hardi 5/16″ fiber cement lap siding as advertised. When fully snugged with the cam lock, it pulls far away from the course of siding, leaving a huge gap for the next course being gauged to slip down way out of line by 3 to 4″. Granted, the instructions on the tool caution that “overtightening will cause a gap”… but if you don’t tighten it fully, then the gauges slip down out of place or completely fall off when the weight of the next siding course is put onto them. The problem is that this POS tool is poorly designed to squeeze the lock IN instead of to squeeze OUT. If it had been designed correctly the angle would not change so that the gap doesn’t form. The tool I wound up using is an actual Gecko brand gauge set, the model that is for the 3/8 LP Smartside lap siding. That tool worked wonderfully. Do not waste your time trying this product for 5/16” fiber cement siding! IT DOES NOT WORK!
