A tool you can measure others against…
Finally, a combo square I can lean on to be dead accurate.I have had many combo squares from cheap to mid range.Every single on has had one thing or another that I disliked. From getting a benchmark that had rust on it to a 6″ combo I-gage that still had burts on the corner. This one came in immaculate condition…not even a single tiny scratch…which I always see no matter what brand.I ran my hand down the ruler groove and that was completely smooth along with the cast head. The baked on powder was also perfect…And to be honest, for the price I would expect nothing less. But they did on their end everything I expected…just a flawless combo square. The knob turns fine and you can get a nice secure rule when you engage it.If I had one small criticism it would be the packaging…it comes with wax paper(to prevent rusting) and wrapped in a clear bag and in a flimsy box.I kind of expected a small case for the cost. That aside, the important part delivered…A perfectly square, smooth combination square.I ordered the 12″ combo right after I got this…PEC is pricey…so the fact I ordered the other one should tell you how I feel about their products.Fantastic tool and I can’t recommend enough!

PEC Squares are ‘the Festool’ of Squares. The ‘Lambo’ of Squares.
You might think the similar looking 6″ square you see at HF for $6 is otherwise similar. It is not.PEC tools is one of the top producers of high precision, very high quality measuring tools. This quality tool is manufactured entirely differently.First, the ‘head’ on the $6 is cast ‘pot metal’. It is soft. It will wear. The ruler slot ‘opens up’ and the fit to the ruler, sloppy to begin with, gets worse. Both the linear accuracy – and perhaps more importantly, the 90-degree face goes off – it becomes 90 +/-, not 90. (Draw a sharp pencil line using the 90 face. Now flip the square around, try to line up the 90 face with the line. If you are looking at a triangle or the line ‘disappears – your ‘square’ is not square.)The head on the PEC is machined cast iron. Now the ruler: The $6 markings are screened paint. The PEC markings are etched. In short, PEC Squares are ‘the Festool’ of Squares. The ‘Lambo’ of Squares.5 starsPEC Squares are ‘the Festool’ of Squares. The ‘Lambo’ of Squares.

    Functionality at a High Cost
I can’t complain much about the quality and accuracy of this combination square. It’s perfectly functional, is perfectly square, and perfectly accurate.I can complain about the cost. I have equally accurate squares that cost a fraction of the price. If I’m going to drop $75 for a square, I’ll do so with a more recognizable and trusted brand. For the price point, I also expected more than cast steel; that was a little disappointing.Bottom line: if you want a high end square, the price doesn’t match the quality. If you want an accurate little square and don’t care about the money, then this is your tool.

The right tool for smaller jobs!
DESCRIPTION: PEC Tools 2-Piece Combination Square Set – 4R 6” Machinist Blade Cast Steel Head, Reversible Locking Bolt, Scribe, for Metalworking, Carpentry and Multiple Applications, Made in USAPROS: Small set for those times when the larger set just doesn’t work.CONS: None.WHAT’S IN THE BOX: The combination square set.REVIEW: I’ve always found ways to get by with the larger combination square set. Or just use a different tool. But it was time to get a smaller square set for the times when the larger set is cumbersome to use. And what a relief! This is a true set and useful for my metal working and wood working. I’m not pro mind you, but I like the right tool for the job. I grew up using the wrong tools for most jobs just because that’s what we had. As I began to do jobs on my own, I realized that the right tool makes with work so much more pleasant. And this little guy is no exception.I love the scribe/score tool that’s included! What a nice touch. There’s also a level included in there. I don’t normally need that, but that doesn’t mean I won’t in the future, so it’s there if I do!AMAZON PHOTO/DESCRIPTION ACCURACY: The photos and description are accurate.VALUE/VERDICT: This is the right tool for small jobs. At $78.99 that may seem high to some folks, but I think it’s worth it for a precision tool like this. But certainly, it’s subjective.

    Not Square
I REALLY wanted to like this. The ruler portion is well made, with the four measuring edges marked in eighths, sixteenths, thirty-seconds and sixty-fourths. The markings are etched into the stainless and the ruler can be marked with a pencil. The locking knob is knurled and easily tightens to prevent slippage. There’s a tiny bubble level that’s of limited utility because the markings are too wide compared to the bubble. The end has a handy little marking needle that is friction fit.The first impression in any tool purchase is the packaging. This arrived in a paperboard box that was flattened in transport. The tool itself was taped inside a plastic bag and wrapped in a small sheet of padding. Not the level of protection you’d expect for a precision instrument.Which takes us to precision: it’s not square. You can see from my pictures that I compared it to a GROZ SS/A4 and SS/A6 as well as a JessEm 8″ Stainless Square. In just over four inches there’s a noticeable gap which measured out at .005″ using feeler gauges. I wanted this to be a mistake, so I took the ruler out and replaced it and kept getting the same result.Given the listed price of $78.99, I’d expect greater accuracy over such a short distance.
